    @ ProsperityGlobal

Sit and reckon for a second or two where you might buy the *Amazon* Kindle from, and I reckon you just might get the answer on your own steam. ;)

If it gets more people reading, that is a excellent thing. Print will not die, I agree, but why the hostility towards this? There are some kids, sad as this may be, who wouldn’t look at a book twice. This WILL get them reading books. Isn’t there room for both paper books and ebooks in this planet? :/

The only thing I dislike about Kindle is the no back light thing. The huge kid in all of us want to snuggle under the duvet to read with this….but for that you’d need a torch/flashlight.

If the material you ‘buy’ comes in no matter what thing but a universally read format like a text file, then is it controlled by someone else. This is NOT a excellent thing when you are into journalism that the state does not like you to read…

I agree – print is not dead. It is really really stupid to ‘buy’ (more like ‘rent’) encrypted material and place it on a system where someone can delete what you wish to read. It smacks of 1984 thinking here folks. Print will never be dead in a free society.

Just to be clear, this is the first Kindle, there is a new model called the Kindle 2 that is *only* about 260$ but also stores thousands of books and has wifi and cellular connection, etc. Im just saying this because I see people posting recently asking where to buy one and commenting on fee.

Can anyone tell me where I can order a Kindle in the UK?.

If you are an addicted book reader, you’d better upload your books on a USB-Flash drive and then go to an internet club and read. I reckon it will be far cheaper…399$ for this? NO WAY!

Own one, it is incredible tech. As for the black and white show, it is very very detailed and easily readable even in candle light (recent power outage in my town). I’m a sci fi nut and practically every title I was looking for to buy was in their library. For clarity, you dont own the books.
You own the right to own the book on your Kindle, and only your Kindle, or akin amazon authorized software, hardware.
I havn’t had any book removed or blocked in the year I’ve owned it. I like Kindle.

I’ll give it a few years before I buy something like this, although I can see the excellent things about it. I reckon it’s early technology, and it would be silly to waste so much money on it now when in 2-3 years there will be something far, far stuck-up on the market, for much less.

No, I don’t like that black and white screen. I reckon it’s an fascinating start, but I’m not even close to being enthusiastic about it. I like excellent ol’ fashioned books.

    lol me too!

  17. isomerised on January 11, 2010 at 9:43 pm

Yes I downloaded a book from Gutenberg to my ipod the other day using a program called Stanza only to find that the book is forbidden (in Aus only?)! Our dependence on technology is now being used to imprison us, and it will get worse the more technologically advanced we become and the more we ignore our regress in other areas of life.

  18. darthspeaks on January 11, 2010 at 9:48 pm

You do NOT own a book when you use this piece of shit tech. They have the power to take away any ‘book’ you ‘own’. It already happened a few months ago.

  19. darthspeaks on January 11, 2010 at 10:22 pm

Sure if you want a piece of tech that is able to TAKE AWAY any book you want to read that someone else does not want you to read. I will always stick with paper and text based text files I have full power over.

    ZOMG i want it

Recyclability aside, what about all of the free applications that do the same thing? My Blackberry is more functional and less expensive than the Kindle but serves the same purpose.

  24. NexusRebellion on January 12, 2010 at 12:48 am

But dont just throw your ancient car out the window to be greener. that makes no significance.

  25. NexusRebellion on January 12, 2010 at 1:07 am

I will agree with that, although more things labeled ‘green’ can be used in a green way if you give some thought to it. But the prius on the other hand… until we get better battery designs, or better at recycling them… they’re not that green.. also taking into account you had to get rid of your car to buy it. Thats a whole car to dispose of. You”re better off with a smart car, a diesel car, or a fiesta/fit/festiva/aveo!
